WORST NIGHTMARE

“NO.” I THRASH MY HEAD back and forth and latch onto Austin as tightly as I can. “Please. You’re wrong. Don’t make me do this.”

“Stay calm, Jewel,” Austin whispers.

“Calm! Stay calm? How can I stay calm? Look what they’re trying to do to us!” My high-pitch voice rings through the air so loudly I’m sure the whole estate can hear me. “Please, don’t make me go.”

“Ms. Jordan, don’t make me pry you away and restrain you,” Viorica says.

“Don’t call me that!” My chest clenches, stealing my breath. I grip Austin with all my strength and bury my face in his neck. “You can’t let them take me. You guys promised me forever. Please.”

“Mr. Divines, release Ms. Jordan into Mitchell’s care now. If you resist, you will be disqualified from matching.”

“What? No.” Tears burn my eyes. “No. No. No.”

“Just give us a few minutes,” Diego says, touching my shoulder. I don’t even have to look at him to know it’s him. I’m so in tune with his body that I can sense his presence. “Can’t you see she’s upset?”

“I don’t even see why these dramatics are necessary,” Kingston says, keeping his voice even. “You’ve already accepted her application to a Blood Vow, which pulls her from the program upon completion.”

“Her application was approved based on her Blood Matching to a Divine. Now that your matching status is in question, her application will need to be re-visited.”

“And if the three of us decide not to proceed and instead hire Jewel’s services and family’s entrance into Haven Springs?” Kingston asks.

“She does not qualify for a staff position with the Jordan blood debt. If she does not agree to a re-test, she will be turned over to Mr. Ortega. Her heirs will return to Dark Terrace Ranch,” a masculine voice says. I can’t put a face to his voice, but I know he’s on the board.

Mitchell closes the space, and I stare at his shiny dress shoes from Austin’s arms. “Boys, please just do as you’re asked. There is no need to argue. This is purely for the record. By tomorrow night, you can return to your normal lives.”

“Unless the accusation proves to be legitimate,” Viorica says. “In that case, Jewel will have a fulfilling life in the Vaduva household.”

“I’d rather accept my family’s blood debt than match with a Vaduva,” I say, spinning to meet Viorica’s smug expression.

“Does that mean you’re withdrawing your application?” Merrick slides up beside her mother and rests her arm on her shoulder.

I blink a few times.

“You realize you can’t back out after the initial questionnaire, right?” the redheaded Vaduva sister asks. I think I recall her name being Heidi.

“I can breach my contract,” I say.

“And risk your heirs’ lives?” Gabriella asks.

Shit balls.

Kingston leans his face down to mine to meet my watery eyes. “Don’t worry, babe. We’ll arrange work contracts for them. They’re old enough to take on apprenticeships.”

“I think we’ll have to change the contract agreement to prevent such an occurrence,” Viorica says.

I tense and glower, hot anger washing through me.
